Sala Super League Marbella – October 2014
Fast greens, Costa del Sol signature sunshine and some excellent play all came together in the October round of one of the Coast’s top golfing meets. A total of 107 players battled out this month’s edition of the Sala Super League where, as well as enjoying a great morning of golf, players and spectators raised over 3,000€ for local charity Cáritas. Helping us on the day was our resident Pro Tom Coulson from the La Cala Golf Academy who challenged the players to ‘Beat The Pro’ although few succeeded.
In fabulous sunshine and balmy temperatures – par for the course in a Costa del Sol autumn – teams and individuals got together at La Reserva in Sotogrande. The course designed by Cabell Robinson has stunning landscapes of cork oaks and freshwater lagoons against a Mediterranean and mountain backdrop.
The 18 holes at La Reserva have a reputation as some of the most challenging on the Coast and Sala Super League participants found the course lived up to its reputation – more than one golfer was caught out by the fast playing conditions. These got even trickier when the wind picked up after the ninth hole and as a result, October’s round proved to be one of the toughest so far. However, many players claimed that the combination of lovely surroundings and testing greens made it one of the best courses they’ve played on and their favourite so far.
This is the ninth edition of the Sala Super League series with just two more programmed this year. With the final on the horizon in December, the contestants were keen to gain maximum points at La Reserva. The winning team, The Mickeys, scored a big 96 to win the match, a full 3-point lead over their nearest contenders. In the individual category, Brett Little scored 45 in this challenging course to take first prize, well ahead of most of the field.
As usual, the après-golf drinks and snacks were well-earned and participants and their supporters enjoyed mini burgers and sticky ribs at La Sala in Puerto Banús. At the ultimate venue for wining and dining on the Coast, the winners received their prizes – golf shoes and bag, and a meal for four at La Sala – generously sponsored by EuroWeekly and Sub Zero Wolf.
A total of 159 individual players and 29 teams are participating in the Sala Super League and vying for the fantastic top prize of a golf holiday in the Algarve, Portugal. The next competition takes place on Saturday 8th November at Rio Real golf course in Marbella and will be followed by complimentary drinks and snacks at La Sala.
The exclusive year-long tournament, organized by Sala Group has been kindly sponsored by Stein Personal and Corporate Planners, Ecocarinvest, Currencies Direct and Sportwagen Porsche Marbella. Not only a great sporting and networking competition for local businesses, the Sala Super League is also a vehicle to support local charities including Cáritas.
