The Fifth Europealia International Folklore Festival in Marbella-Johnny Gates-marbella news

Last week the most extraordinary event took place down on the Paseo Maritimo in Marbella, the fifth Europealia International Folk Festival.

Now if you think this was some sozzled Morris Dancers waving their kleenex then think again…I can’t think of the last time I saw such colour and vibrance down on the boardwalk.

The Bolivian troupe stole the show with their amazing costumes, poor buggers must have been sweltering in the Marbella heat, with odd references to St George and masked dancers looking like they had stepped off the plane from Bali. Easter Island also put in a great show with Polynesian dancing and Hakka like chants, I didn’t think anyone lived there so I guess they were really from Chile.

Russia, Venezuela, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Germany were amongst many countries that came to show their traditional dancing, costumes and music, and surprisingly not a Morris dancer in sight, still there’s always next year…
